Insurance Update: Experimentals and LSAs

Last time we looked at insurance, the Dow hovered at around 10,000. What’s new?

As the economy has continued to whipsaw, we couldn’t blame general aviation pilots for admitting to a good dose of shock and uncertainty. Every facet of the financial sector has been slammed, and it’s natural to wonder whether the health of the aviation insurance industry has been pulled along for the beating. The good news is, not really. We took a look at the current state of aviation insurance for homebuilts and Light Sport Aircraft and, overall, it’s in pretty good shape.

To get a feel for the current insurance market, we spoke with Bob Mackey, a representative of the EAA Aircraft Insurance Plan, administered by Falcon Insurance Agency of Kerrville, Texas. Mackey noted that overall the insurance market continues to be supportive of Experimental aircraft and LSAs. The underwriters have not reacted sharply to the recent economic traumas, and have maintained their conservative stances and requirements in writing…
