Broken Starter Ring Gear Teeth

Many times the starter ring gear is overlooked on an inspection. On this particular aircraft there were multiple broken teeth at various points around the gear, necessitating removal and replacement, which was detailed in an article [“Maintenance Matters: Did a Starter Kickback Knock Your Teeth Out?”] by Dave Prizio in the January 2015 issue of KITPLANES. It’s not that difficult, with the hardest part being the removal and replacement of the constant-speed prop.
