Small square of black tape should align with the corner of the elevator, as shown on the left, when an aircraft is in the proper formation position. Red strip of tape on the bottom of this F1 Rocket’s flap points to the tip of the spinner when an outside airplane is moving into and holding a correct formation position (right).

Wayne McMaster of Jeffersonville, Indiana, likes to fly formation in his F1-Rocket with his RV buddies but the F1 is enough different from the RVs to cause sight-line problems. Using the usual RV method of lining up the inner aileron hinge with the tip of the propeller spinner doesn’t put the outside plane in the correct position. So, he created an easy solution. A strip of red tape on the underside of each flap aligns with the tip of the spinner when the following aircraft is properly positioned. In addition, he put a black square of tape on the rudder that should like up with the inside, aft corner of the elevator. Clever little tricks to help his buddies find their correct position despite the unique configuration of the F1.
