We no sooner put the nice flying Scalebirds P-36 on the March cover of KITPLANES than we ambled across this creative suggestion of a Scalebirds P-40 in their AirVenture booth. And for sure the simple wood outline and bulkhead-like cross pieces instantly say “P-40.
Scalebirds is foreshadowing a bit here as the P-36 kit is just reaching a handful of beta builders and the P-40 version is to come after the -36 is in production.
The bulbous P-40 front end is a bit ironic as the original packaged a sleek V-12 while the P-36 sported a blunt radial. Thanks to the P-40 mounting it radiators and oil cooler below the V-12 we now have a ScaledBirds with a veritable warehouse available in the engine compartment—not that you’d want to fill it up for weight and balance reasons.
