It’s easy to think of a fire extinguisher as a last-minute accessory: buy one, bolt it somewhere convenient, and move on. But in a homebuilt aircraft, the extinguisher’s agent, rating, mounting location, and bracket all affect whether it can be used quickly in an emergency.
The choice can matter after the fire is out, too. Some agents leave residue that can work its way into wiring, avionics, and inaccessible spaces, creating significant cleanup and repair problems.
Builders make hundreds of decisions about everything from fuel lines and wire routing to panel layout and cockpit ergonomics. The cockpit fire extinguisher deserves the same level of design judgment.
The Cockpit Is the Wrong Place for Powder
Many common ABC extinguishers are dry chemical units. They’re inexpensive, readily available, and effective. The issue isn’t whether they can put out a fire; it’s what happens if you discharge one inside a cramped cockpit.
The most immediate problem is the powder cloud.
Chris Dieter, Senior Vice President of H3R Aviation, watched a dry chemical extinguisher discharged inside a Boeing 737 test aircraft at the FAA Technical Center. “Clouds of dust obscured our vision and made breathing difficult even with N95 masks on,” he said. “Not being able to see while you’re trying to fly and land safely is not a factor you want to add to an emergency.”
Dry chemical residue from the extinguisher can cause long-term problems, because it can get into wiring, avionics, cracks, seams, and hidden spaces.
“You can effectively put out the fire and then spend months repairing your aircraft because you basically have to tear it apart in order to get at the agent,” Dieter said. “Otherwise, over time it will just continue to corrode.”
FAA guidance generally does not recommend dry chemical agents for internal aircraft use. That points builders toward clean-agent extinguishers, typically halon or approved halon alternatives.
What Builders Need to Know About Clean-Agent Extinguishers
Clean agents such as Halon 1211 and approved halon alternatives avoid the powder problem. They don’t obscure visibility or leave corrosive residue behind.
They can also reach spaces where powder may not be as effective. This makes them well suited to cockpit fires that may start behind the panel, in wiring, or around avionics.
“If you’ve got a fire hidden behind a panel, you can spray halon into a gap, and because it’s a gas, it can get to that fire and put it out,” Dieter said.
Halon 1211 has long been used as a performance benchmark in aircraft fire extinguishing. Instead of simply smothering a fire, it chemically interrupts the combustion process.
Some builders assume halon is no longer an option because new production ended in the 1990s for environmental reasons. But in the United States, new extinguishers charged with recycled Halon 1211 are still available.
Halon continues to be used in aircraft today because it’s compact, effective, electrically nonconductive, and leaves no residue after discharge.
Check the Rating, Not the Bottle Size
For cockpit use, builders should look for a 2B:C extinguisher. The B rating means it’s rated for flammable-liquid fires (such as fuel or oil), and the C rating means the agent is suitable for use around energized electrical equipment.
It’s important to compare extinguishers by rating, not just size.
“Builders might look at a one-pound Halotron 1 extinguisher and a one-pound Halon 1211 extinguisher and assume they’re equivalent, but they’re not,” Dieter said. “Halon is roughly twice as effective.”
A one-pound Halon 1211 extinguisher can carry a 2B rating, the minimum benchmark identified in FAA guidance for small aircraft compartments up to 200 cubic feet. To get the same 2B rating with Halotron 1, a builder would need a 2.5-pound unit, which means more weight and more space.
That’s why the listed rating matters more than bottle size or weight.
A UL listing is also important, because it means the extinguisher was laboratory-tested to recognized standards.

Mount the Extinguisher for Emergency Access
Figuring out where to mount the extinguisher is a design problem, something kit builders are already used to solving.
The pilot should be able to reach and release it one-handed, without looking, while keeping the other hand on the controls.
In a side-by-side aircraft, consider whether both seats have access. In a tandem aircraft, make sure the pilot can reach an extinguisher from the flying position, which may mean installing another unit in the back.
The extinguisher also needs to stay put until needed. Mount it to the airframe structure, not upholstery or a trim panel that could break loose. Use a metal bracket and strap where appropriate.
“Some extinguishers have plastic parts that might be fine under your kitchen sink, but not on an aircraft subject to vibration and “inertia loads,” Dieter said.
Before drilling any holes, sit in the aircraft with the belts fastened and the controls in place. Close your eyes and reach for the proposed mounting location. Could you release the extinguisher with one hand? Could you do it without bumping the stick, throttle, rudder pedals, canopy latch, or passenger? If not, rethink the location.
Once the extinguisher and bracket are installed, include them in the aircraft’s empty weight and center-of-gravity calculations.
Inspect It, Then Practice It
Over time, fire extinguishers can lose pressure, get damaged, or become blocked by baggage, upholstery, or cockpit changes.
For experimental aircraft, the annual condition inspection is a natural time to check the extinguisher installation. Add it to the inspection routine.
Check the bracket to make sure it’s still secure. Pull the extinguisher, confirm the gauge is in the green, and check the service label. Also make sure the extinguisher is still accessible with the seats, belts, cushions, and controls in their normal flying configuration.
Then practice the motion. On the ground, with your eyes closed, reach for the extinguisher and release it from the bracket, the same way you would rehearse any other emergency procedure.
“A fire is not the right time to ask yourself where you put your extinguisher,” Dieter said. “Your response should be rehearsed. In an emergency, you’ll need that muscle memory.”
Extinguisher selection and placement can also make a useful EAA chapter or builder-forum safety discussion, especially because these decisions are easy to overlook until the cockpit is already finished.

The Extinguisher Is Part of the Cockpit
A cockpit fire extinguisher is a deliberate builder decision, just like avionics, fuel routing, or ergonomics.
It’s not simply a matter of finding a unit that fits the available space. It’s about making sure the aircraft carries an extinguisher that can be reached instantly, discharged without making the cockpit harder to manage, and maintained so it is ready when the pilot needs it in an emergency.
Cockpit Extinguisher Checklist
Builders should choose and install an extinguisher that is:
• 2B:C-rated for flammable-liquid fires and use around energized electrical equipment.
• A clean agent, such as Halon 1211 or an approved alternative.
• UL listed, with a tested fire rating.
• Mounted to airframe structure, not trim or upholstery.
• Secured in a bracket that holds under vibration and inertial loads.
• Reachable and removable while seated and belted.
• Included in empty weight and CG.
• Checked regularly for pressure, condition, access, and service date.
