There are two types of people in the world; those who like round engines, and everyone else. Shane Madson from Westlock, Alberta, Canada falls soundly in the first category. His highly modified J3 Cub sports a Verner 9S nine-cylinder radial produced in Czech Republic. Madson hopes to become the Canadian distributor for Verner Motors.

Other Verner radials start with three cylinders, and go up to nine cylinders in increments of two (3, 5, 7, and 9-cylinders). The radials range in horsepower from 43 BHP to 158 BHP. The largest, Scarlett 9S nine-cylinder engine is installed on Madson’s Cub.
All the Verner engines are direct drive, slow turning affairs. In other words, they sound like a “proper” radial.
Madson’s custom Cub is an unusual match for the Verner radial. He reports that most find their home on warbird replications, both WW I and WW II.
