For the e-ab community, the biggest stories at AirVenture 2026 were found in the places Oshkosh has always mattered most to builders: the homebuilt areas, the forums, the kit-company booths, and the growing body of aircraft now being shaped directly by MOSAIC. AirVenture 2026 appears to mark the first Oshkosh where MOSAIC ceased to be mainly an FAA rule in draft beyond the horizon and became a reality—a visible design influence on the airplanes that homebuilders, kit manufacturers, and sport-pilots will build and fly in the months and years ahead.
That shift is important because MOSAIC has promised to alter the boundaries of light personal aviation without severing it from the amateur-built world. In previous years, discussion of the rule often had a speculative quality. Builders could imagine what might happen once the old 1,320-pound light-sport cap gave way to a broader stall-speed-based framework, but much uncertainty remained. At AirVenture 2026, by contrast, the signs of change were sitting in plain view on the grounds. Several manufacturers used Oshkosh to highlight airplanes conceived, revised, or repositioned with MOSAIC explicitly in mind, and their decisions provide a revealing snapshot of where kit and light-aircraft design is headed.
Among the most interesting examples was Air Command’s new sport-pilot gyrocopter, which EAA highlighted as one of the new aircraft tailored to the MOSAIC environment. The aircraft is slated to use a Polaris RZR engine and is targeted for flight testing in September 2026. In a broad industry sense, that may seem like a niche development. For homebuilders, however, it is a useful signal. It suggests that the new regulatory flexibility is already encouraging designers to be more adventurous about both airframe category and powerplant choice. CubCrafters’ Carbon Cub ULT points in a similar direction, though with a mission profile much more familiar to KITPLANES readers. Based on the Carbon Cub UL, the ULT pairs lightweight backcountry performance capabilities with a TurboTech regenerative turbine engine, dual FADEC, and a single-lever power control system. What makes the airplane noteworthy is not simply that it uses a turbine. It is that CubCrafters is plainly seizing the opportunity to rethink what “sport-pilot-capable” can mean when the discussion shifts from gross weight to performance For builders who have spent years balancing useful load, short-field aspirations, and the compromises imposed by the old light-sport ceiling, this is the kind of development that opens up myriad possibilities. The Carbon Cub ULT itself may remain outside the practical budget or technical appetite of many readers, but its existence signals that the design realm of light recreational aircraft is broadening.
That same paradigm shift is visible in aircraft that are more conventional in form but no less significant in intent. Pipistrel’s Voyager, shown as a two-seat IFR trainer powered by a Rotax 912 ULS and equipped with a ballistic parachute and Garmin AXIS avionics, reflects an expectation that MOSAIC-era aircraft should be more capable, more integrated, and more polished than the light-sport models of the past. Deliveries are expected in 2027, but the importance of the airplane is already clear. It represents a category of aircraft that is no longer content to be viewed as merely simple or entry-level. That matters to homebuilders because OEM thinking often reveals where market pressure is heading. When a company like Pipistrel designs a trainer around IFR, whole-aircraft safety, and modern integrated avionics within a MOSAIC-compliant framework, it establishes a benchmark that kit buyers and amateur builders will inevitably use in judging their own aircraft choices.
Vashon’s Ranger Grand Teton belongs to the same larger conversation. EAA describes it as a rugged, all-metal aircraft intended for the realities of training and utility flying, with Dynon synthetic vision, angle of attack, a two-axis autopilot, and powered by a Continental O-200-D. The appeal for builders lies in how closely that formula resembles the logic of many successful experimentals: durable structure, sensible systems, and an emphasis on usefulness. It is one thing to admire a sleek composite speedster; it is another to study the choices behind an airplane designed to be flown hard and without drama. The Ranger Grand Teton reinforces the point that the post-MOSAIC world is not only about bigger engines or more seats. It is also about a more practical understanding of what pilots expect from a modern personal aircraft.
Zenith’s CH 750 Super Cruzer may be the most directly relevant Oshkosh 2026 development for traditional kit enthusiasts. Zenith says that the airplane has been structurally re-engineered for increased gross weight and higher operating speeds, while also incorporating redesigned wing leading edges and revised tail surfaces intended to improve cruise performance rather than chase the outer edge of STOL theater. That is an especially revealing design decision. The experimental and light-sport communities have spent years rewarding aircraft that can leap off a grass strip in a few hundred feet, but real-world ownership often places equal or greater value on pleasant cross-country capability, cabin comfort, and a broader mission envelope. The Super Cruzer addresses that objective. It suggests that at least one major kit manufacturer believes that the new era will reward airplanes that remain controllable at low speed but better satisfy pilots who actually want to go somewhere.
No AirVenture recap aimed at KITPLANES readers can overlook Van’s, and Van’s presence this year appears to have offered one of the clearest examples of how established kit manufacturers are adapting to the new landscape. AOPA reported that Van’s displayed an RV-12 configured to fly under instrument flight rules as envisioned by the updated FAA framework. In the short term, that means practical changes such as a heated pitot tube, alternator updates, and related systems improvements. Van’s product information describes a heated, wing-mounted pitot mast with angle-of-attack capability, alternate air and static sources, an auxiliary alternator, revised radiator and oil-cooler arrangements, and fuel-system changes intended to improve vapor-lock resistance at high density altitudes. Collectively, the refinements represent a conscious effort to build a more mature and operationally resilient airplane within the new rules.
KITPLANES and Van’s aircraft have both noted that a substantial portion of the broader RV line falls within the expanded performance envelope now available to sport pilots. That changes the conversation about who can fly these airplanes, how they may be equipped, and what level of capability makes sense for builders looking ahead to resale or long-term utility.
If MOSAIC gave Oshkosh 2026 its most visible airframe story, homebuilt judging may have supplied its most revealing cultural one. KITPLANES reported ahead of the show that EAA’s homebuilt judging criteria were being revised for 2026, with greater emphasis on builder logs and a process designed to identify leading award contenders earlier for closer follow-up. On the surface, that may seem esoteric, but it touches one of the most enduring tensions in modern amateur-built aviation. As kits have become more refined and professional help more available, the difference between “built by the owner” and “assembled with significant outside assistance” has become harder to assess by finish quality alone. By putting more weight on logs and documentation, EAA appears to be making an important statement about what it wants Oshkosh awards to mean.
That change is likely to resonate with experienced KITPLANES readers. The modern experimental marketplace includes builder-assist centers, turnkey panel shops, sophisticated paint houses, and quick build options that save extraordinary amounts of time and can produce stunningly polished results. Those developments have improved safety and lowered barriers to entry, but they have also raised legitimate questions about authorship and credit. In that environment, a builder log is no longer just a sentimental scrapbook or a compliance obligation. It becomes part of the aircraft’s identity and part of the evidence that the owner shaped the machine in a meaningful way. Oshkosh 2026, at least on paper, appears to reaffirm that craftsmanship is not merely about flawless finish but about the story of how the airplane came into being.
Even so, rules and judging standards are, of course, only part of what makes Oshkosh important to builders. The deeper appeal of AirVenture has often been in the one-off machines and individual histories scattered through Homebuilt Camping and the Homebuilt areas. EAA’s Hangar Flying story by Robbie Culver on Robert Bounds’ Bearcoupe, described as a homebuilt with a “checkered past,” captures exactly that side of the event. The Bearcoupe is significant not because it establishes a trend or introduces a technology, but because it embodies the individuality that the homebuilt movement exists to protect. In a year when the headlines are heavy with regulations, standards, and product strategy, an airplane like that is a useful reminder that the experimental world is still, at its core, a place for singular ideas.
That point sharpens the meaning of the larger Oshkosh story this year. The new rules do not seem to be pushing builders toward conformity. If anything, it appears to be giving both manufacturers and individual designers and builders more room to match airplanes to actual missions instead of fitting them awkwardly into an older regulatory box. One builder may use that freedom to pursue a more capable IFR-oriented light aircraft, another to explore a sport-pilot gyro, another to optimize a backcountry airplane around modern engine technology, and another to continue building a deeply personal one-off that owes more to tradition than market logic. The common thread is not uniformity but flexibility.
The forums and seminar tents remain crucial to understanding how that flexibility is likely to be used. Gleim’s AirVenture 2026 seminar preview highlighted homebuilding, safety, ownership, and MOSAIC-related sessions as particularly worthwhile tracks for attendees. That is important because AirVenture has always functioned as a knowledge exchange as much as a display event. For builders, the value of Oshkosh often lies not in seeing a new airplane from fifty feet away but in hearing a sharp question asked in a crowded seminar room and listening to how a designer, regulator, or experienced owner answers it. In the context of MOSAIC, those sessions likely served as the place where practical implications were translated into builder terms: equipment choices, certification pathways, pilot privileges, insurance considerations, and the effect of new rules on legacy aircraft.
That is also why the homebuilder-focused parts of Oshkosh matter more to KITPLANES readers than some of the flashier corners of the show. A military flyover or a turbine business-aircraft debut may be spectacular, but neither tells a builder much about what to rivet, wire, reinforce, or document on the project waiting in the garage. A serious homebuilding forum, by contrast, can alter an entire project plan in an hour. Will future kits be designed deliberately around the expanded sport-pilot limits, or should manufacturers continue building to broader mission targets and let the regulations sort themselves out? How should builders think about capability creep, especially when modern avionics and electrical systems tempt every project toward more complexity? Those are the sorts of questions that seem to have defined Oshkosh for the homebuilt community this year.
Even the historical side of the show reinforces the same themes. KITPLANES reported that Vintage in Review returned to AirVenture 2026 with daily sessions devoted to aircraft from aviation’s first half-century. The Pioneers of Flight display likewise centered attention on the aircraft of the first decades after Kitty Hawk. Those attractions are not homebuilt displays in the modern sense, but they do underscore values that remain deeply familiar to builders: structural directness, mechanical clarity, modest systems, and the idea that an aircraft can be elegant because it is honest rather than because it is electronically sophisticated. In an Oshkosh increasingly filled with advanced glass, integrated autopilots, and turbine-powered light aircraft, those older machines still provide an important calibration point. They remind builders that innovation and simplicity do not have to be enemies.

Taken together, the available evidence from AirVenture 2026 tells a coherent story. MOSAIC is reshaping aircraft, from gyrocopters and turbine Cubs to IFR-capable trainers and rethought kit designs. Kit manufacturers appear to be responding with specific engineering decisions: revised pitot systems, alternate air arrangements, stronger structures, different high-lift priorities, and clearer mission definitions. EAA, for its part, appears to be adjusting the culture around awards and craftsmanship by insisting more explicitly on the importance of builder documentation. And the homebuilt community itself remains broad enough and confident enough to absorb those changes without surrendering the variety and individuality that make Oshkosh exciting and important in the first place.
For those who were not on the grounds, that may be the most useful conclusion. The biggest Oshkosh stories for builders in 2026 do not depend on having heard the engine note from the flight line or stood shoulder to shoulder in front of a display rope. They are visible in the design choices manufacturers made, the regulations they chose to emphasize, the judging standards EAA revised, and the kinds of aircraft that now define the conversation around personal aviation. Judging from the airplanes and policies that emerged there, that era looks increasingly favorable to builders.
