American Legend Aircraft Company announced that it has selected the lighter weight O-200-D engine from Teledyne-Continental Motors (TCM) to power future models of the Legend Cub Light Sport Aircraft. The company completed and flew its first aircraft with the O-200-D powerplant and displayed it at Sun ‘n Fun.
American Legend Aircraft has used the 100-horsepower Continental O-200 engine in the Legend Cub since the aircraft was introduced in March 2005. Over 150 of the currently flying 170 Legend Cubs and Texas Sport CUBs are powered by the O-200. The new O-200-D lightweight engine will give the Legend Cub an increase in useful load of 15 pounds.
We’re delighted to provide the powerplant of choice for the Legend Cub, said Mac Little of TCM. Our longstanding partnership with American Legend validates our commitment to the fast growing Light Sport Aircraft market.
The O-200 is a proven member of Continental’s family of horizontally opposed piston engines. The new O-200-D lightweight features a dry weight of 199 pounds. Its four 50-cubic-inch cylinders deliver true 100 hp at 2750 rpm normal cruise. This engine has been successfully flown for over 70 years on a wide variety of light aircraft including the Cessna 150 and Piper PA-18-90 (and L-18B) Super Cub.
We are very excited about the advancements offered by the O-200-D engine and its application on the Legend Cub, Legend FloatCub, and Texas Sport kitbuilt CUB, said Kurt Sehnert, general manager of American Legend Aircraft. The reduced weight of the O-200-D, Continental’s vast expertise, and its leadership in the piston engine market make it an ideal choice for our customers.
The Legend Cub is a two-place aircraft designed to meet Light Sport Aircraft certification requirements. It will come standard with a Sensenich ground adjustable composite propeller. Base price of the O-200-D-equipped Legend Cub is $103,895.
