Following 13 months of intense development, including the creation of a system for viewing video online, Advanced Pilot Seminars (APS) has unveiled a web-based seminar that brings its breakthrough concepts to GA pilots worldwide. Now in its fourth year, APS has taught nearly 1000 pilots and mechanics science-based techniques of engine management, backed by hard data acquired on the most advanced piston engine test facility in the world.
We werent sure it was possible to convert a weekend of hands-on instruction by three instructors to an online version, and it was a challenge, said APS instructor Walter Atkinson. The result is a full seminar that a pilot or mechanic can take anywhere, anytime, at his or her own pace.
APS teaches methods for operating piston aircraft engines for maximum fuel economy, safety and longevity, combining data from the engine makers with research from millions of hours of engine operation. George Braly, John Deakin and Walter Atkinson started the program in 2002 with seminars in Ada, Oklahoma. Heavy use is made of the Carl Goulet Memorial Engine Test Facility to demonstrate the effects of changing mixture, rpm, manifold pressure, fuels, timing and other parameters while the engine is running. This team of instructors also developed teaching concepts and simple terms (the red box and big mixture pull, for example), which have now become part of the common aviation lexicon.
