Spectator Day

Most of the homebuilts that made up the record-setting attendance in Homebuilt Camping and Parking earlier in the week have left the field and the non-aviation spectators are here in force. The schedule is still full with workshops, forums, and demonstrations—and all the exhibitors are present—but the atmosphere changes dramatically at the end of the week. The big names fly the air shows of the weekend but so do the RC demonstrations, the drunken good-ole-boy in a J-3, and a hovercraft made famous by a James Bond movie. The hands-on simulators are filled by non-pilots, mostly tire-kickers visit the kit manufacturers’ booths, and the mattress salesmen have ramped up their hawking in the big hangars. Perhaps most disappointing to our readers who show up late in the week, the Homebuilt community has mostly fled.

But, it is Oshkosh and a mediocre day at AirVenture beats the best day at any other North American (or, perhaps the world) fly-in. So, if you can only make the last weekend, come on over! It’s still worth a visit!

Even our Editor-in-Chief, Paul Dye, headed out this morning to join his family for the weekend.
