Aircraft Engine Buyer's Guide 2021

PBS Aerospace

When it comes to the smell of kerosene in the build-it-yourself world, it’s a story of one. The SubSonex single-seat jet is the one airframe readily available, and the PBS TJ100 Turbojet produced in the Czech Republic is the one engine that airframe is designed for. It’s the one engine with the thrust, size and availability to fit the sport aviation bill.

PBS does not disclose technical or pricing information without a nondisclosure agreement, so we’re unable to report directly on the little jet. But prospective buyers can speak to Sonex Aircraft, LLC, who lists the PBS engine on its website with full supporting hardware for $65,000, or perhaps to Bob Carlton of Vertigo Airshows, who has considerable TJ100 experience both with a SubSonex and on his airshow glider.

The only jet in town: the PBS TJ100. Sonex is the most accessible and experienced source of information on these compact turbines.
