2022 Engine Buyer's Guide

PBS Aerospace

Currently there is but one place to burn kerosene in the build-it-yourself world. The SubSonex single-seat jet is the one airframe readily available, and the Czechoslovakian PBS TJ100 turbojet is the one engine that airframe is designed for. It’s the only jet engine in production with the thrust, size and availability to fit the sport aviation bill.

PBS does not disclose technical or pricing information without a non-disclosure agreement, so we’re unable to report directly on the little jet. But prospective buyers can speak to Sonex, who lists the PBS engine on their website with full supporting hardware for $65,000.

Sonex is the place to purchase the PBS TJ100-E3S turbojet. It’s been used on the single-seat SubSonex and will also see double duty on the upcoming two-seat JSX-2T version.

Pumping avgas and waxing flight school airplanes got Tom into general aviation in 1973, but the lure of racing cars and motorcycles sent him down a motor journalism career heavy on engines and racing. Today he still writes for peanuts and flies for fun.
