All High-Wing Planes Are Not Alike

With the recent release of two new models of high-wing kit planes (Sonex high-wing and RV-15), there is discussion about what are the differences between them. I hear the question, “I wonder if I should get the Sonex or the RV?” To those who have seen both models, that question makes as much sense as asking, “Should I get an RV-3 or an RV-10?” They will serve completely different missions! To provide a visual demonstration of some differences, I grabbed colleague Larry Anglisano and posed him next to some of the kit options for those who want a high-wing, homebuilt airplane. Size is definitely one of the differences.

Kitfox airplanes have been the standard of light, back-country, kit-built airplanes for years. This 916 iS ups their capacity but still is on the lighter, smaller-than-some spectrum.

The RANS S-21 came out a few years ago and has proven a popular choice.

The Sling 916is isn’t known as a backcountry airplane but it is a highly competent, high-elevation, homebuilt.

The Zenith CH750 Super Duty is a serious STOL, lightweight aircraft on the less expensive end of the spectrum.

The Sonex Highwing is another new entry into the homebuilt, high-wing category. They also started taking orders this week. It is definitely on the diminutive side and expected to represent the lower cost version of a kit-built, high-wing airplane.

Looking for high-capacity and versatility? It would be hard to beat the Bearhawk. Their Patrol model is shown here on floats. It is also on the high-end of cost.

Vans Aircraft has started accepting orders for wing kit for their first high-wing entry into the market, the RV-15. Sales are reportedly brisk and they plan to deliver the kits ordered at the show in December 2025.

The CarbonCub NX is now available as a kit. It is an impressive performer at the lighter end of this group but the higher end of the price range.

  1. You can add the Comp Air 6.2 to the high wing list. Unfortunately they only have the turbine powered version at Osh this year, but it’s an E-AB kit nevertheless.
